This talk shows that Leicester’s Victorian terraced housing is not all the same; it has a wide variety of design and decoration.
In the last quarter of the 19th century brick and terracotta companies produced a huge variety of decoration that could be added to the smallest houses. Leicester’s builders used a lot of this decoration. Along with the influence of changing fashion and design, this has left a fascinating legacy that we can enjoy today.
Colin Hyde manages the East Midlands Oral History Archive. He also has a passion for photographing Leicester’s buildings and streets
