Annual Human Rights Lecture
The Removal of Human Rights? Professor Alwyn Jones |
Dominic Raab, the Justice Secretary, said that his new Bill of Rights would “reinforce” human rights protection, but Liberty called it a “rights removal Bill”. The talk will explore this debate. While the Bill was shelved temporarily during Liz Truss’s time as Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak re-appointed Dominic Raab as Justice Secretary in October 2022. In November, the Bill was still listed on the Parliament web site and it seems likely that the government will ask Parliament to enact the Bill, or a similar proposal. Alwyn Jones is an associate professor in the School of Law at De Montfort University in Leicester. When he was a law student in the 1990s, he volunteered with Liberty, researching the policing of environmental protestors. All welcome - admission free .
